The Road to Valdez (or… “Be careful what you store in the bouncing end of your 5th wheel”)

They didn’t have wifi connections during the days they traveled between Haines and Valdez, but here are some highlights of this leg of the journey:

Haines to Destruction Bay via Haines Junction – Before leaving Haines, they appreciated many eagle sightings…

and on the way were fortunate to have great weather to enjoy the many vistas..

On the way through Haines Junction, entry number three was purchased for the cinnamon roll contest (see earlier post). They overnighted at Cottonwood Campground in a 15 amp option that created some challenges, but it was overlooking serene Kluane Lake. Evening entertainment was a serenade by a country “singer” on the patio of the registration office.

Destruction Bay to Tok – Cliff and Mary’s slide out tearing itself up on the rough “frost-heaved” roads, resulting in mechanic advice of “don’t slide it out all the way” so adjustments were made. At Sourdough Campground, Mary was one of four winners in the sourdough pancake toss – free breakfast the next morning of pancakes, eggs and reindeer sausage. (In the picture, they are each holding their prizes – tiny pancake tokens.)

Tok to Valdez – incredibly rough road that sprung open cabinet doors in spite of bungees, moved items from shelves and cabinets to kitchen counters and floor, broke open a glass jar of peaches in Donna and Ron’s rig and caused a Schweppe’s tonic water can to explode from its side! Big mess.

Valdez – Beautifully situated community in the middle of mountain ranges overlooking Port Valdez. Next post will include a selection of wildlife and scenery images.
